  • What is the Aggressive-Voice grading system and how is it defined?

The preferred grading system for rating moves is the A-F letter system. I find stars to be useless as the range varies from source to source. Is a 4-star movie good? That's perfect according to Roger Ebert, although the majority of internet critics, that's a 4/5; good but not great. Some sites go by a 10-star system and others use 100. So you see, it's hard to tell what a 4-star movie is, however a movie given a "B" is lot clearer. Then again, not all letter-grade scales are consistent either, so here in detail is ours.

A ...Perfect. A movie this good changes your life.
A- ...Not Perfect, but very close.
    B+ ...An overall great movie.
    B ...A good movie.
    B- ...A movie I can barely recommend.
C+ ...A slightly better than average/mediocre movie; still falls short of a recommendation.
C ...An average forgettable movie with little to praise about.
C- ...A bad/average movie with major flaws and defects.
D+ ...A horrible/bad movie; although evidence of something good is present.
    D ...A horrible movie.
    D- ...Absolute trash.
F ...Shouldn't have been made. It's either offensive, insulting, or both.

Notice there is no "A+" grade, as there is no such thing as an "A+" in academia. For a movie to be recommended, it must fall in the "B- to A" range. I usually caution "B-" movies.

How come I haven't been bombarded with ads, promos, and fancy looking pop-ups yet?

Aggressive-Voice is proud to be a pop-up free site. There are no annoying flashy-banners to distract you. There are no pop-up ads to slow down your computer. There are no pop-under ads lurking for when you leave our site. There are no chances to whack-a-mole for a free car. And there are no full-page movie ads that are typically found at other movie review sites. The only external links you'll find are those related to Aggressive-Voice's content.

We will, however, accept your contributions. You can support us by buying something at Amazon.com by clicking on the link from our homepage, or by clicking on any product in our book store. It will take you to Amazon.com, and any purchase you make will help fund Aggressive-Voice.

What makes you a respectable movie critic?

I'm generally well-respected in the internet community as a competent writer and movie reviewer. As you can tell, I review more movies (a lot more) than most online movie critics, so my recommendations usually carry more weight. For example, I won't say a movie is the scariest of the year when I've seen one that's scarier, while another critic might have only seen that one and assumed it to be the best. I consider myself somewhat witty and I try to incorporate a healthy level of humor in each review to make it more exciting to read.

I don't let any outside source affect my review of a movie. I've seen many online critics write very similar reviews to other critics, and I see that as a violation of ethics. About 90% of the time, I rate a movie the same as Roger Ebert, my favorite movie critic. There are times when we disagree completely, but that is usually not the case. Because I have so much respect for Roger Ebert, I feel honored to share his opinion.

Would writing to you be a waste of my time?

It is an Aggressive-Voice policy to accept and read all feedback from readers. I try to respond to every thoughtful e-mail and comment sent my way, because the people who write to me are the people I write for. Some of the comments get posted on the feedback page.

What's so great about being a Premium Aggressive-Voice Member?

Only premium members have access to in-depth analysis and commentary of selected films. Often you will find no review more thorough than those read by premium members. Premium members also have access to spoilers of down-right horrible movies. I believe this is a vital service because there is no better way to convince someone not to see a movie than to tell them how it ends. Sometimes it is hard to argue a case against a film when you can't tell him how it ends or what the resolution is.

Why did you start the Premium site?

The premium site was founded so only a select group of people could have access to the premium material. I designed the premium site to be a reward for regular Aggressive-Voice readers. I wanted them to have access to material not available to the occasional passerby or one-time visitor. Of course, anybody can become a regular AV reader as well as a premium reader at no charge.
